DRASTIC

DRASTIC is our first Horizon Europe Project, where Omtre will demonstrate one of its circular solutions: the supply and prefabrication of reclaimed barn timber elements for structural use in a temporary commercial construction.

More about the project

DRASTIC is a Horizon Europe Project about Demonstrating Real and Affordable Sustainable Building Solutions with Top-level whole life-cycle performance and Improved Circularity. The project involves several European academic and business partners, led by VITO (Belgium). DRASTIC is about designing sustainable buildings with reduced embodied energy and carbon emissions, high life-cycle performance, and reduced life-cycle costs. The project addresses systemic changes in a rapidly evolving EU building and construction sector. It aims to accelerate the circular processes of constructing, renovating, reusing, and relocating new and existing products to empower local ecosystems to make the CE transition by implementing Circular Systemic Solutions (CSS). This is done through providing frameworks and a digital platform to assess, trace, and validate the reduction in GHG emissions throughout the lifecycle(s) and by recommending new business models that accelerate market uptake.

Omtre as the Nordic Pilot Leader

The Nordic Pilot emphasizes the innovative use of reclaimed timber for structural and load-bearing purposes in temporary buildings. Utilizing timber plays a critical role in carbon sequestration and other environmental benefits. However, the extraction of virgin timber can lead to unintended adverse effects, such as biodiversity loss and increased land use pressure. As a result, it's more sustainable to prolong the lifespan of materials by reclaiming timber from structures that no longer serve a useful purpose and repurposing it in new constructions. Nevertheless, the reuse of reclaimed timber, particularly in structural and load-bearing applications, presents its own set of challenges.

The primary aim of the pilot is to explore the market for temporary commercial buildings. In the Nordic pilot, various uses will be examined, ranging from storage facilities for roadworks to specific applications like a tool shed for a re-sawmill in Hønefoss within the DRASTIC project. Additionally, there will be a significant focus on refining processes that minimize damage to materials, ensuring that they can be reused across multiple lifecycle stages.

This initiative is led by three key partners under the DRASTIC program: Omtre, Produktif, and the timber engineering experts in Taltech in Estonia. Produktif strives to supply an industrial and digitalized design process including innovative joinery products and an assembly and disassembly methodology. In DRASTIC, Omtre has two roles: 1. material supplier (and prefabricator) 2. client of the demonstrator. Within the DRASTIC framework, Omtre's approach to recycling wood from demolition sites will be integrated with Produktif's design for assembly and disassembly (DFAD) process including intelligent connectors and sub-assemblies' components to create temporary commercial buildings. These structures can be quickly erected and taken apart. Researchers from Taltech, based in Estonia, are involved from the start of the DRASTIC project to assess technical risks, conduct initial studies, and evaluate final performance.

Timeline: October 2023- September 2027

Initially, the two startups are focusing on their respective product developments. Omtre is streamlining its process for collecting and grading reclaimed wood, particularly from barns, and prefabricating them ready for fabrication into subassemblies with other products.

This effort is also connected to SirkTRE, one of Norway's largest funded R&D projects led by Omtre.

A significant hurdle is the absence of standards for assessing reclaimed wood. In Norway, new standards are being proposed under SirkTRE. Within the DRASTIC project, efforts include building further on SirkTRE’s outcomes by working on Estonian regulations and, where feasible, pursuing standardization at the European level.

The variability in the sizes of reclaimed wood presents another challenge. Produktif's innovative connectors act as adaptable joints for these varied dimensions. Produktif aims to further develop initial prototypes using new timber for structural applications, showcase them at external events, and conduct fire and structural testing in collaboration with Taltech. By focusing on quick assembly and disassembly, Produktif intends to lower labor costs, making the solution more cost-effective and suitable for multiple life cycles. The design facilitates future disassembly, with smart connectors allowing for the use of varied materials, including reclaimed wood.

By late 2025- early 2026, Omtre plans to collect reclaimed wood from various abandoned barns. These materials will be graded, tagged, and sent to Produktif for pre-assembly into components, then re-labeled before being used by Omtre to construct a tool shed on-site in Hønefoss, Norway. This shed will stand for at least a year, after which it will be dismantled, and the materials will be stored for future reuse before the DRASTIC project’s end in autumn 2027. These physical processes will relate to the digital solutions in Work Package 4, streamlining sustainability assessments, diagnosis and quality checks and traceability over multiple (re)use cycles.

Omtre as Task Leader

Omtre has been building capacity in leading complex tasks within R&D projects, exemplifying its capability through meticulous management and delivery of critical deliverables. Tasked with coordinating comprehensive demonstration reports, Omtre effectively gathers and synthesizes timelines, specifications, and permit processes from all demo leads, ensuring precise adherence to project schedules and regulatory requirements.

Additionally, Omtre spearheads the creation of exploitation maps and booster kits, conducting structured interviews with exploitation managers across various organizations to map out strategic pathways for project exploitation and replication. This dual leadership role not only showcases Omtre's adeptness at coordinating multi-stakeholder initiatives but also highlights their proficiency in producing valuable project outputs that pave the way for market scalability and impact.
